Just imagine my joy when a friend sent me a photo of the front of The Times extoling the virtues of Pilates! Imagine my utter delight when I realised the sub-editors had grouped the word ‘Pilates’ and a picture of Harry Styles on the same front-page teaser.
This is exactly the shot in the arm Pilates needs. Too long the poor sister to yoga, if former One Direction member and pop megastar Harry Styles is doing it, then it must be cool! In my mind Pilates is already cool without the celebrity endorsement. It has been part of my exercise regime for more than 25 years and I continue to tap in into Pilates every single day…even when I am on holiday (see below).
Interestingly, The Times article focused on Pilates for men. The headline on the actual article read: “If you want to be ripped like Harry Styles, take up Pilates” If you have not read it, the journalist sings the praises of Pilates having been advised to take it up by his physio to ease a back problem caused by years of being hunched over a laptop.
In another article on the same page, a super-experienced weight trainer claimed: “I thought I was fit, then I tried Pilates.” He also shared his impression of Pilates before trying it: “I associated Pilates with posh people who slotted it in between acupuncture and a salad-based lunch.”
While the articles focused on using reformer machines and their benefits for men, the principles of Pilates are the same for women who do their sessions on mat. I think there are three main takeaways from The Times homage to Pilates:
- Pilates is cool and it WORKS!
- Pilates is a genuine and truly beneficial form of exercise used by already fit people
- Pilates can be used as way of combating physical conditions
I would like to add some extra information, however. You do not have to be a fit person, gym-goer, or international superstar to do Pilates. Practised regularly, Pilates will make you fitter, stronger and more flexible. This is why I tailor all my classes to suit the people in the room. Where people are more experienced, I can give them an extra challenge. Where people are just starting out, feeling below par, or are carrying an injury, if give them an option that will suit them. Everyone is still working and still getting the wonderful benefits of Pilates.
If you want to give Pilates a go, I am offering a taster class at one of my South Hams locations, so you can experience first hand how Pilates can enhance your wellbeing.

After all, if it is good enough for Harry Styles…it must be good enough for you! Don’t just take my or Harry’s word for it here is what my clients say:
“I would recommend to anyone of any age. The classes are enjoyable and it is great to feel the improvements over the weeks in flexibility and strength.” Fiona
“Go for it, you’ll love it and if you stay consistent, it won’t take long before you start to see results.” Emma
