Cold weather can exacerbate aches and pains. You often hear people say they feel cold in their bones. Physiologically that’s not really a proven condition, but there’s no doubt people feel achier when temperatures start to drop.
The simple solution is to keep warm. But not everyone can afford to keep their heating on all day or still feel cold even if they do layer up with extra clothing.
It will not surprise you that I would advocate moving to stay warm. NHS Fife (no doubt it gets very cold up there) advises people who suffer from regular aches and pains to “stay active and exercise regularly – even if it’s just at home”.
They also suggest stretching and loosening muscles and joints before going outside, plus maintaining a healthy weight to put less stress on joints.
If you already suffer from pain, then you probably want to steer clear from exercise that puts extra force through your joints, but you can still benefit from gentle exercise.
Pilates for aches and pains
Step up Pilates! I have written before about the benefits of Pilates and highlighted approval from other sources as a safe form of exercise. I believe Pilates could be the answer for so many people this winter.
I can guarantee that if you feel a little chilly at the start of a class, you will not feel cold by the end of it. It gets your blood flowing and helps you become more flexible and stronger.
All my in-person Pilates classes are held in venues where I can put the heating on and you can wear as many layers as you like, but I also offer online classes, so you do not even have to leave your home to benefit from regular exercise.
Online Pilates classes
If my 8am Wednesday online class does not fit into your schedule, I can send you a video recording. In fact, I have a special offer on right now offering five recordings for just £10, so you can get a bit of variety.
Not only will Pilates help keep you warm and help ease aches and pains, this blend of controlled movements and focused breathing will target your core strength, flexibility, and overall wellbeing. You’ll sculpt lean muscles, improve posture, and enhance your body’s balance.
It’s not just a physical workout…it’s a mindful practice that helps reduce stress, increase mindfulness, and promote mental clarity.
Pilates really is a win-win-win-win scenario this winter!
